About Woollongabba

Woolloongabba is an inner suburb between South Brisbane and Kangaroo Point in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.  It is approximately 2 kilometres south-east of the Brisbane CBD. 

The suburb was once home to a large tram depot and contains the  Princess Alexandra Hospital.

History of Woolloongabba

Woolloongabba was formerly known as One Mile Swamp due to its low-lying and swampy area. Its name was derived from an Aboriginal expression which was interpreted as referring to whirling waters, a fighting place or a wallaby. 

The suburb has a significant link to the history of transport in Brisbane as it is home to a tram and railway lines. 

Tourist Attractions in Woolloongabba

The suburb has many apartment buildings due to river views and the Brisbane CBD. The Norman Hotel is a local landmark that has served customers since 1890. 

Woolloongabba is also home to historic Russian and Eastern European churches, ethnic grocers, coffee roasteries and the hallowed ground of the Gabba. 

This includes Jack Rabbits Whisky Bar, Canvas Club, Clarence Corner Book Shop, and Pincadia. 

Schools and Sports in Woolloongabba 

Buranda State School is a primary school for Prep to Grade 7 and was in heritage-listed state school. The Dutton Park State School which is a primary school was known as Woolloongabba State School in 1884. It is also a heritage-listed state school. 

The Brisbane Cricket Ground which is commonly known as Gabba is a major sports stadium. It serves as the home ground for the Queensland Bulls,  Brisbane Heat, and  Brisbane Lions.
