History of Tennyson

James Strong, one of the original settlers, originally named the area Softstone.  The name was changed to Tennyson by 1897. Tennyson is named for Alfred Tennyson, a British poet.

Thomas Pamphlett and two others were shipwrecked on Moreton Island in April 1823. They were taken to the mainland by wandering and using a small boat. They moved upstream down the Brisbane River, stopping at the Oxley Creek where they saw two local canoes. They used the canoes to return to the coast. They ended up at the  Point Skirmish, Bribie Island, by Oxley in October. Canoe Extension reaches downstream from the confluence of the river at Oxley Creek. Oxley Creek was called Canoe Creek.
