About Tarragindi

Tarragindi is a suburb south of Brisbane City, Queensland, Australia. It is represented on the Brisbane City Council through councilors of the Holland Park and the Moorooka Ward. Tarragindi had a population of 10,779 at the 2016 census.

History of Tarragindi

The area was named after a resident of the Loyalty Islands (near modern-day New Caledonia) who was relocated to Queensland in the late 19th century. Such people were a cheap source of labor for the production of sugarcane, called Kanakas.

Tarragindi apparently escaped and was later employed by Ipswich`s Alfred Foote. Later, on a hill near Sandy Creek, he cleared land for William Grimes (related to Alfred Foote), and the area was named after him. Tarragindi remained in Ipswich with the Foote family until he died, at the age of 63. Tarra Gindi Tasserone`s grave is located in the General Cemetery at Ipswich.
