About South Bank

South Bank, in Brisbane, Queensland  Australia, is a cultural , social, educational, and recreational area. The precinct is located on the south bank of the Brisbane River, in the suburb of South Brisbane.

History of South Bank

Originally a gathering ground for local settlers, the Turrbal people and the Yuggera people, South Bank was the main point of early European colonization in the early 1840s.

South Bank Precinct was rapidly established as Brisbane`s business center from the 1850s. Main businesses in the district relocated to the river`s northern side for safety after the 1893 flooding in Brisbane.

This is where the main business area of Brisbane still remains today. This began the South Bank`s decline and the area became home to vaudeville theatres, abandoned boarding houses and light and heavy industries.

Tourist attraction in South bank

One of Brisbane`s most famous tourist attractions are the South Bank Parklands, which was built on the former World Expo 88 location. There are many restaurants and cafés in the parkland, as well as landmarks such as the Queensland Conservatorium, Brisbane`s Wheel, Nepal Peace Pagoda, Streets Beach (a free man-made swimming area), and Grand Arbour. About 11,000,000 people visit the South Bank Parklands every year.
