About Kangaroo Point
Kangaroo Point is a south side inner suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It is a narrow tongue of land bordered on three sides by the Brisbane River and about three-quarters of a kilometre east of central Brisbane.
History of Kangaroo Point
Kangaroo Point is one of the oldest suburbs in Brisbane that is rich in history and character. In 1823, Kangaroo Point was described by John Oxley as a "jungle, fringed with mangroves with the higher land open forest, covered with grass".
On 13 December 1843, the first land sales took place. Surveyor James Warner was the first who built a house at Kangaroo Point in 1844.
Tourist Attractions in Kangaroo Point
The suburb is a popular recreation spot, conveniently close to the city and the South Bank Parklands. The cliffs in the suburb including Kangaroo Point Cliffs are popular in picnic, rock climbing and abseiling sites.
There is also the Story Bridge, the longest cantilever bridge in Australia. It is a prominent landmark as it is able to be climbed with authorised tourist groups and provides access to the north of Brisbane.
Schools in Kangaroo Point
St Joseph`s Primary School is a Catholic primary school situated at 26-36 Leopard Street.
The suburb has no government schools. The nearest government primary school is East Brisbane State School in East Brisbane and Coorparoo Secondary College in Coorparoo.
For tertiary studies, Kangaroo Point is host to Shafston International College and the Aboriginal Centre for the Performing Arts (ACPA) and to a Southbank Institute of TAFE campus until its demolition in 2009.
