About Highgate Hill

Highgate Hill is an inner suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It is approximately 2 kilometres south of the Brisbane Central Business District on the Brisbane River.

History of Highgate Hill

The first European residents in the suburb was George Wilson and his family who built a homestead in Bellevue Street in the 1860s. He is thought to give the name Highgate Hill in the locality that is possibly named after Highgate Hill in London. The suburb estate first appears in an advertisement for a land sale in 1864. 

The development of the suburb continued after the Second World.

Tourist Attractions in Highgate Hill

Tourists will enjoy exploring the Highgate Hill as it has numerous astounding historical streets, river, parks, grand 19th century villas, and shops. 

There is a small park at the highest point of Highgate Hill that has excellent views of the city and surrounding hills. The Lyons Playground Park which is also known as Paradise Park, is a well equipped small park that also has a community garden. Also, Orleigh Park has playgrounds, BBQ and picnic pavilions. 

A short hop from the river is Alberto`s Shot, a delightful cafe serving top notch food, Italian-style hospitality and well-made coffee.

There is also the Nassagaweya, an example of a late Victorian architecture built for the moneyed classes.
