About Hawthorne

Hawthorne is the Brisbane City, Queensland, Australia`s suburb. Hawthorne had a population of 4,989 people in the 2016 census.

Hawthorne is situated 6.5 km (4.0 mi) east of the CBD by road.

History of Hawthorne

In the 1860s Hawthorne began as a farming district and gradually subdivided as Brisbane grew. The introduction of ferry and tram services helped in this.

In October 1885 Arthur Martin & Co advertised the "Galloway`s Hill Estate" for auction. A map shows the blocks in Wendell Lane, Waldo Lane, and neighboring Hawthorne Road including river front property.

In September 1885, the "Oak Park Land," consisting of blocks on Orchard Lane, Park Street, and Oak Street, was first advertised for sale.

The name of the suburb has two theories. One was that in 1875 butcher William Baynes bought land in the area, called it after Hawthorn in Melbourne, where he stayed until he arrived at Queensland in 1859. Alternatively, Baynes planted a lot of hawthorn bushes in the 1850s and 1860s.
