About East Brisbane

East Brisbane is an inner southern suburb located about 4.8 kilometres south-east of the Central Business District. It lies between Woolloongabba and the Norman Creek.

In the eastern side of the suburb is the small hill with some views over Woolloongabba and the CBD, and falls away to Norman Creek.

History of East Brisbane

East Brisbane was only sparsely settled until the European settlement in 1870s. A post office was opened in 1886 and Shafston, the first of several hotels was opened in 1890. The East Brisbane primary school was opened in 1899. In 1900, a few miles east of the school, the Lord Stanley Hotel was opened. By then, Stanley Street continued across Norman Creek, and had bridged in 1886.

Major landmarks in East Brisbane include Mowbray Park, a remnant of the riverine estate and  a heritage-listed park and monument. The Common Park that features outdoor fitness/exercise trail, picnic area/shelter, playground, skate facility, and basketball half court. Real Park which has playground, barbecue, picnic, and dog off-leash area.

There are also several heritage-listed sites including Kitawah, Eskgrove, Classic Cinema / Triumph Cinema, and  Hanworth. 

Schools and Sports in East Brisbane

East Brisbane State School is a government primary school serving years Prep-6 located at 56 Wellington Road. Situated at Oaklands Parade is the Anglican Church Grammar School which is a private primary and secondary school serving Prep-12 years. 

The suburb is home to Eastern Suburbs Football Club. It plays at the multi-sport venue, Heath Park.
