About Balmoral

Balmoral, an inner suburb of Brisbane, lies across the Brisbane River, 4 km north-east of the city centre. It had been named after Queen Victoria`s country house in Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

Now a suburb of scarcely more than 1.5 sq km, the name denoted a wider area before the 1925 amalgamation of Greater Brisbane.

History of Balmoral

The word Balmoral is Baile Mhoireil`s anglicisation that is Scottish Gaelic for `beautiful house` or `majestic fortress.`

On June 25, 1927, Thornton and Pearce auctioned the Panorama Heights properties, including 53 reserved websites. The estate was situated in Balmoral, on Fifth Road.

Balmoral Shire was incorporated into Greater Brisbane by the mid-1920`s. It had focused on the best residential areas, leaving the less suitable for post World War II accommodation.

Balmoral recorded 3,827 people in the 2011 census, 51.8 percent were female and 48.2 percent were male.
